Ah! I've been trying to figure out what the hell the problem was. At first I thought it was the firewall (every time I try to install sp1, vista removes only Internet Explorer from the firewall list, which is one of the stupidest things possible). But after adding it back on the list it still wouldn't connect along with a number of other programs expect for iTunes (I have a grudge against you Apple Inc but I credit you for managing to escape vista's system suicide). I had to do a system restore and currently my laptop does not have sp1. I will reinstall sp1 and do what you suggested. Thanks!
